This was Lia’s first real thanksgiving in ages. Being around a family, even if they technically weren’t hers was nice. Since Rocky had died, things had been a little weird for her at least uncertainty on her end. Her ties to the Rockwells had been through marriage. His parents weren’t her parents, his brother was her brothers… hell half the time Rocky had not wanted them to be his family so she didn’t even know where she stood in that regard. The baby, she suspected was the only reason they were even tolerating her existence any further. She was carrying their grandchild, the only tie they had left to their youngest son and despite the strained relationship they’d had with Rocky, they really wanted to know the baby.
Maybe it was selfish of her to hold on to them as some sort of family of her own. She knew Mr. Rockwell had no particular feelings of kindness towards her. He had as much as accused her and Rocky of only getting married because she had been pregnant. He didn’t get it, she didn’t suspect that he ever would but staying around was her way of proving to him that she wasn’t just some girl his son had ‘knocked up’ she was Rocky’s wife, and his daughter-in-law and she wasn’t going anywhere because she did, and always would only love Rocky. Miguel was being great something that was both surprising and comforting at the same time. She still didn’t know him that well but he seemed genuinely committed to being, in his words ‘the best uncle ever’. Maybe it was his way of making up for being a shitty brother to Rocky, either way it was nice to know there were more people out there that cared about her daughter than just her.
Being vegetarian meant her dining choices were sort of limited for the occasion. She couldn’t eat turkey, or gravy, or the stuffing. She could eat potatoes and beans…that was pretty much all she’d seen so far that was edible and she’d brought something of her own just in case which it looked like she was definitely going to need. Miguel was watching Football with Mr. Rockwell and she was sitting there quietly observing. It was all so normal, too normal in fact she wasn’t sure what to make of it, or even how to behave. This should have been her and Rocky’s first holiday together as a married couple… instead she’d started the morning by visiting his grave something that had been her worst fear when she’d met him. Being with her had gotten him killed, the only thing in her life she had ever loved that much outside her own family, she had lost once again at the hands of the supernatural, and there was nothing she could do to bring him back, not without insulting his memory and jeopardizing their daughter’s future. Standing up from her place on the couch she supported her bump as she moved to the kitchen. “Are you sure I can’t help with anything Mrs. Rockwell?” she asked. It seemed painful to just sit around in silence while the boys talked sports. She was used to it of course, but she didn’t feel comfortable chiming in not today.
”No dear you just relax it’ll be a while still why don’t you go for a walk or something?” and Lia offered a half smile. Why had they even invited her there, she had to wonder. Was it just to make sure that when the baby came she would feel obligated to bring her to Holidays? They didn’t seemed to particularly want HER there. “Sure, that’s probably a good idea” she admitted and made her way outside. It was so warm, even for November. She hadn’t quite fully climatized to the Louisiana weather and she knew that up north a lot of places already had snow and here she was enjoying the beautiful warmth of the south. She winced slightly placing her hand on her stomach as she felt the baby move. “Ow” she muttered, that hadn’t been like any kick she’d felt before but all day in and out she’d been feeling discomfort from the baby, she just hadn’t thought too much of it. She was still a couple months away from delivery it was probably just because she was so much bigger now that she was feeling her more.
As she made her way down the sidewalk and through the neighbourhood she adjusted her bag on her shoulder. Her green eyes took in the surroundings and she couldn’t help but think about the fact that this had been where Rocky had grown up. He’d probably rode his first bike down the sidewalk, gotten his first injury there too. God she missed him, she had managed to pull herself out of the purse depression that she’d been living in the past few months but it was only in appearance. There was an empty space where her heart should have been, she was hallow. In fact, thought she’d never confided the truth in anyone if she hadn’t been pregnant, she probably would have just ended it all. She’d had one chance at happiness and it had been ripped away just like everything else in her life. This baby, had saved her life and she knew how important she had been to Rocky, she was going to make sure his daughter knew just how much she was loved.
This was why she hadn’t gone for a walk earlier, she knew being alone brought this about. She needed to keep herself busy or the demons came back, took over her mind. As she brought herself back to attention she was surprised to find how far she’d wandered away. “crap” she muttered and turned around to head back, she had completely lost track of him the afternoon was probably passing quickly and she’d completely zoned out. As she walked she stopped suddenly and glanced down. “….damn it”
Finding a cab on Thanksgiving day had been harder than finding a needle in a haystack but thankfully she’d managed to get one. She didn’t have her phone on her and she had a feeling it was too late to try and walk back to the house now, no she needed to get to a hospital and quickly. “Toruo hospital please” she said and her voice was surprisingly calm. She had to keep it together she knew that. She wasn’t sure how much time exactly had passed but soon enough they arrived and the Cab Driver was even nice enough to help her inside. It was busy, as any hospital might have been but it only took one statement of ‘I think I’m in labour’ and she was suddenly in a wheelchair being taken in for examination. Yup, it was labour all right and way too soon they all agreed. They interviewed her about the two times before she had gone into premature labour and it had managed to be stopped but as they checked her out, it was far too progressed to do anything to stop it now, so there was no choice but to deliver the baby and hope for that best. She was trying not to panic, she needed to stay calm. People had premature babies all the time and there was nothing wrong with them, it was going to be fine.
Dear is there anyone you’d like us to call? one of the nurses asked pulling her out of her focus. The father? Or your parents? at the reminder of both Lia choked back tears and just shook her head. “It’s just me” she said carefully. They were all dead, how could she say that to a stranger. Jake had made it very clear upon finding out that she was pregnant that they were done, he’d done his duty of walking her down the aisle but from then on she hadn’t so much as seen or heard from him, he didn’t even return her calls when Rocky had died. Jimmy, well he had been around somewhat but she had no idea where he was now and it was too late to call hi, she wasn’t going to call her brothers, she could do this on her own. She was taking care of the baby alone, she was going to do this alone too.
Lia had been through a lot of pain in her lifetime, both emotional and physical yet nothing could have truly prepared her for this. After what seemed like hours of pushing with strangers telling her how to and not to breath, behave, do. The screaming sounds of her daughters lungs caused her to collapse back in exhaustion. She did it. She had gotten to see her for a grand total of two seconds before they had taken her away and it was like her Djinn nightmare all over again but they promised they were bringing her back, and she had no choice but to believe them. She couldn’t get up, she could barely keep her eyes open so following them was certainly out of the question. They had taken her away for too long, her baby was wheeled into the room wrapped in a soft pink blanket, the tiniest but otherwise perfect picture of health. She watched as the nurse lifted the baby and placed handed her over placing her gently into her arms. Miss Rockwell, this is your daughter she said with a smile and Lia could not tear her eyes from the little bundle of perfection that was her own. “It’s Mrs” she said quietly but her green eyes never left the exhausted little baby in her arms. For the first time in what seemed like forever, Lia smiled a genuine full hearted smile. She looked just like him, like Rocky and it brought her back to what he had said to her after they were married. I changed my mind about kids, I want them right away. That way if anything happens to me, you’ll always have a little piece of me with you. He was right, she was a little piece of him, the last piece and holding her in her arms, it healed the hole in her heart just a little bit, gave her back some of what he had taken with him when he’d died. Leaning down she pressed her lips gently against the baby’s forehead “Welcome to the world Lizzie, we’ve been waiting for you”
